History of Montessori
The Montessori Method is an approach to education designed by Italian physician and educator, Maria Montessori. Born in 1870, Maria Montessori lived in Florence and Rome until graduating from the University of Rome with a Medical Degree. After which she began working closely with children in developing her method.
The principles of Maria Montessori's method revolve around observation and development of a child's natural abilities. This is done not through traditional lectures but hands-on learning facilitated by the teacher. A child's autonomy is fostered by allowing them to select work from a given range of choices.
What is the Montessori Method?
Maria Montessori the founder of the method identified a fundamental principle of human development for absorbing knowledge (The sensitive Periods) and developed material that will allow a child to teach themselves.
Practical Life
Refines fine motor skills, dexterity, and coordination in activities needed for orienting one's self in society and being independent. Tasks demonstrated include, folding, pouring, sweeping, spooning, tonging and washing. All tasks represent real-life practical duties needed for everyday life. In addition, Practical life is used to hone the child's attention span and focus.
Sensoral
In sensorial work, the child learns to fine-tune each of the senses. These range from visual, tactile, baric, thermic, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and stereognosis senses. Using activities that isolate 1-2 senses it is possible for the child to classify different ranges and intensities of each sense.
Language
Acquiring language by working at the pace of each child and focusing primarily on the sounds of letters. After which the child combines sounds to form words followed by reading.
Mathematics
The Montessori Method of mathematics involves an introduction to both the metric and imperial system with numbers up to the thousands place value. Learning is achieved through an in-depth understanding of quantity and symbols. As the child progresses they are exposed to both static and dynamic arithmetic.

The Prepared Environment

The Adults Role
Is to invite the child’s interest with every presentation. Provide the child with the means to help himself and fade away to observe the children, but be ever so present and alert to heed their call.
